St. Andrew’s Organ
The organ has a fascinating history dating back to 1883. It was built by Hook and Hastings of Boston, Massachusetts for the Universalist Church in Brattleboro, Vermont. The church closed around 1993, and the organ was moved to Saint Peter’s Catholic Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As late as 1959, the organ remained intact and was still in use regularly, but by 1977 it was superseded by an electronic substitute. The pipework was stored on the floor behind the organ and in a furnace room. Most of the great pipework was ruined or had disappeared by 1980 when the organ was removed.
A crew from the Organ Clearing House of Harrisville, New Hampshire, carefully dismantled the organ. It was taken to Spring Hill, Florida, and stored until a complete rebuilding project of the organ was complete. The organ was fully restored and installed at Saint Andrew’s in 1983 by Klug and Schmacher of Lakeland, Florida. Klug and Schmacher continue to maintain the instrument with bi-annual tunings and maintenance. The organ was located and voiced for the worship space at Saint Andrew’s by Rev. Harold Bumpus, the pastor of Saint Theresa Catholic Church as a generous gift to the church. He was an experienced organ builder. The beautiful organ cabinetry was re-finished by Saint Andrew’s parishioners.
